Source editing shows the wikitext behind the page. Use Edit source for precise links, templates and generated sections. You can copy the examples below and replace the sample names.

Everyday formatting

An ordinary paragraph. Leave a blank line before the next paragraph.

Background
Early life
Bold text and italic text.
* A bullet point
* Another bullet point
# First step
# Second step

Ikuuna Canon
A different link label
A descriptive source title

Do not add an = Article title = heading; the wiki supplies the page title. Use headings rather than bold text to mark sections. A single line break in source usually does not start a new paragraph.

References and pictures

A sourced statement.

Sources
<references />

Replace the sample URL and filename with real ones. Files need source and rights information on their own description pages; see Help:Images and files.

Templates and categories

Draft

Template names go inside double braces; parameter names and values are separated by =. Blank optional values can be left blank. For a literal pipe inside a parameter, use where necessary. The template guide lists the components used here.

A category goes near the end of the page. To link to a category without adding the page to it, put a colon first: :Category:People of interest.

Use the editor tools

The source toolbar can insert common formatting. The syntax-highlighting control enables CodeMirror; line numbers, matching brackets and folding make long pages easier to navigate. Editor choices live in editing preferences. Existing choices are yours to keep.

TemplateWizard in the classic source toolbar offers named fields for supported templates. VisualEditor's source mode has its own template tools. Use the starter layouts when you want a whole page structure.

In the classic editor, use Show preview and Show changes, add a summary, then Save changes. VisualEditor's source mode uses the Save changes review dialog. Cancel cancels; it does not save a draft. Keep any text you need before leaving.
