File descriptions should record the creator, original source and the basis for the stated copyright status. The wiki's default text license does not automatically license uploaded images or other files.

Reviewing a record

  1. Follow the source and identify the particular work and its creator.
  2. Check the license or permission attached to that work. A general website footer can provide context, but may not establish the historical license of a particular file.
  3. Record the evidence on the file description, including a source link and any relevant date or explanation.
  4. If the evidence is uncertain or contradictory, explain the uncertainty and leave it in Category:Files needing copyright review. Ask a wiki administrator when a decision about the file is needed.

Do not invent permission, treat a missing notice as public domain, or silently change a license to match the site's default.

Available notices

  • Template:CC-by-sa-2.5 displays an existing CC BY-SA 2.5 declaration. Its optional review=yes and note= parameters flag a record needing investigation.
  • Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0 displays a CC BY-SA 4.0 declaration.
  • Template:PD records a public-domain claim. Supply reason= and source= only when supported by evidence; an absent basis is flagged for review.
  • Template:Unknown copyright marks a file whose copyright status is not recorded. This is not a reuse license.

These notices describe the record; they do not independently verify rights or grant permission. See the relevant Creative Commons deed or the original rights holder's statement for reuse conditions.
