Stories/Maroon Moonlight

From Echoes of the Flesh

Maroon Moonlight | Anonymous Nälkän

Someone had squawked. Their recklessness was putting the Nälkä in danger, and it had to be dealt with. Väisänen wanted to simply set them on the right path, but the time had long passed for that... no, the only option was to terminate them.

She often had doubts & reservations about this action. The Nälkä promoted love, after all... this felt against all of her teachings, but despite the voice nagging her in her head, she also knew that if they were allowed to keep running free, the Nälkä could... no, would be in serious danger. Thankfully, she had pulled some strings, and knew that this problematic individual would be at a bar tonight.

Väisänen crouched in a tree as she waited for them to come out of the bar.. She had her trusty Gewehr 43, a rifle that had gone through many changes over its lifetime, just like her. While it started off as a standard issue German rifle with a ZF-4 scope, it had been rechambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and was modified to use a picatinny rail, mounted with a much newer ZF4-MKO rifle scope with a NSV 1000 night sight.

She had already dialed in the range, the nearby landmarks proved helpful as she knew their distance off by heart. Her finger rested on the trigger, her heart rate steady and her mind ready to do what it had to. The Nälkän walked out of the bar; she held her breath to steady her scope, and she squeezed the trigger.

The shot rang out across the town, bouncing off of structures, echoing for what felt like forever. She pulled out her binoculars to double-check that she got the kill... she had; there was no way they could have survived that. She slid down the tree, picked up the casing her rifle ejected, and fled the area on foot, sticking to the shadows.
